BACK-END Developer

Math&Pencil is looking for engineers and designers who want to face interesting infrastructure challenges. The firm currently has a variety of different clients trying to solve a series of interesting problems: automated law-based documentation generation, distributed shipping software (mobile & web-based), and web-based training software for a large medical device supplier.

We are looking for developers who are able to seamlessly move between all aspects of a web application: any serious candidate should feel comfortable writing a new jQuery plugin to solve a current front-end problem to implementing a distributed system using tools like Django, Hadoop, or Node.js. We are looking for engineers that can think out-of-the-box: your college degree and grades do not matter to us. If you are fun to work with, love cheap beer (preferably Miller High-Life), and are passionate about designing beautiful software we want to talk to you.

All of our software is deployed on Amazon EC2 using a variety of open-source products such as Django, JQuery, Hadoop, Node.js, Nginx, Fabric, Gunicorn, MongoDB, and Tornado to name a few. If you do not like our current technology stack, shoot us an email, tell us why we suck, and give us some new suggestions.

Any ideal candidate would posses most of the following:

  • A college degree in CS, Math, EE or equivalent.
  • Experience or interest with Machine-Learning, Data-Mining, Statistical Signal Processing, and Natural Language Processing a HUGE plus.
  • A love for both functional and non-functional programming languages.
  • Experience with advanced data visualizations.
  • A scrappy, entrepreneurial attitude that gets high-quality projects done quickly.
  • Deep understanding, familiarity and skill with programming for the web.
  • Experience in Objective-C and Python (Django) is a plus, but not required. If you do not use Django, your going to have to explain why.
  • Ability to touch many different parts of our system such as: deploying a new set of boxes on EC2, debugging network inefficiencies, implementing optimized graphics algorithms in C or OpenGL, writing optimized SQL queries, writing NodeJS applications, etc.
  • A demonstrated history of intellectual and entrepreneurial exploration.
  • Be able to write elegant, readable, and well-documented code

Growing up amidst the rust belt of East America Joseph Misiti and Tim Hungerford(co-owners of this fetchingly fantastic digital firm) dreamed of utopian worlds built by equations and enveloped in pretty. After studying and obtaining degrees in quantum mathematics, metallurgy, cosmic plant foraging, coloring book composition and classical soul music, the next logical step was to create a digital business development firm. Math & Pencil takes lofty, seemingly unattainable, concepts and makes them digital reality. Digital reality is a bit of an oxymoron you say. Well, you may be correct. But the term sums up large proportions of our modern enterprising world these days does it not? From machine learning to marketing and info graphics, the firm leverages its breadth of study to create seamless applications. Building branding that makes Pepsi and Coke look like Billy Bob's Corner Store and offering data packages that even your 80 year old grandmother could understand the value of.

P.S. If you're interested in having a digital business concept developed please send us an email at info@mathandpencil.com and we'll be in touch. We can also get you access to latest beta sites we're working on :)
